GEOCELLS
Geocells consist of a series of cells or webs which are typically formed by welding or bonding together a
series of long narrow sheets of polymer at regular intervals. The bonded sheets when opened form a large
web or series of cells into which geotechnical materials such as soil or rock are placed. The confinement
of the soil by the cell creates a rigid platform which has been used for stabilization of roadways,
retaining walls or over steepened slopes, and erosion control in channels and sloped surfaces. Geocells
were originally developed by the Corp of Engineers in the late 70's for stabilization of roadways over soft
subgrades.
